In 1881-82 there were three clubs from Reading in the last 37 of the FA Cup, and none from Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle. Several internationals had already played for Reading FC. Whatever happened to that head start?

The Lost Years, by WSC regular Roger Titford, reveals the true story of football in the town from its uncertain beginnings in 1871-72: the forgotten trials and triumphs of its premier club, as it edged towards the top of the national game but almost slumped out of existence, before reviving in the fresh, frenetic football mania of the 1890s but the splitting apart, with long-term consequences for the club of today.
